Gaisberg's summit road, completed in 1929, was built for motorists — today its final hairpins carry more pilots than drivers.
The mountain rises 1,287 metres on Salzburg's eastern edge, the last significant height before the Alpine foothills give way to the flat Flachgau plain. That geography is the whole story. Warm air lifting off the basin meets the ridge and turns upward, producing the reliable thermals that made Gaisberg one of Austria's earliest free-flight sites. Hang glider pilots established the eastern launch in the 1970s. Paragliders followed in the mid-1980s, when the first canopies were light enough to be carried up in a rucksack. Regulation shapes the experience more than most visitors expect. Austrian tandem pilots hold a commercial licence issued under Austro Control, with logged flight hours and annual equipment inspections. Wings are re-certified on a fixed cycle. Launch decisions rest entirely with the pilot, who reads wind direction at the take-off ramp against forecasts drawn from the summit station. Nothing about a flight is negotiable once conditions turn.
The mountain has a quieter significance too. Gaisberg gave its name to the Gaisbergrennen, a hillclimb motor race run on the summit road from 1929 until 1969, and the tarmac's original camber survives in places. Nature-protection status now limits building on the upper slopes, which is why the ridge remains largely bare grassland — and why the launch fields have stayed open ground for four decades.
